Birbhum, 26 May (H.S.): Amid the changing political scenario in West Bengal, the Trinamool Congress has suffered another setback at the municipal level. In the latest development, Sagar Kundu, councillor of Dubrajpur Municipality and president of the town unit of the Trinamool Youth Congress, announced his resignation from both the party and his posts.
With tears in his eyes and an emotional voice, Sagar Kundu said he no longer has any association with the Trinamool Congress. On Tuesday morning, he reportedly went door-to-door in his locality informing residents personally that he is now a former councillor of the ward.
“I will no longer continue as a councillor. At the same time, I am also resigning from the post of town president of the Trinamool Youth Congress,” he said. He further clarified that he was severing “all ties” with the Trinamool Congress. However, he maintained that despite leaving the party and his posts, he would continue serving the people.
When asked whether his decision was linked to the Trinamool Congress losing power in the state, Sagar Kundu responded that he had never imagined seeing such a day, but added that “the people’s verdict is final.”
Dubrajpur Trinamool MLA Anup Kumar Saha declined to comment extensively on the matter for now. He said the situation would be assessed once an official resignation is submitted. The MLA further stated that every councillor in Dubrajpur Municipality would be kept under strict scrutiny based on the work carried out in the civic body, and anyone found involved in corruption would not be spared.
Meanwhile, local BJP leaders took a swipe at the Trinamool Congress, claiming that the party itself was facing an existential crisis. According to them, under such circumstances, it was only natural for leaders to leave the organisation.
