Hyderabad, April 09 (HS): The Telangana High Court on Thursday reserved orders on a plea filed by senior Congress leader Pawan Khera seeking protection from arrest in connection with an FIR registered by the Assam Police on a complaint by Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, wife of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

The plea was heard by Justice K. Sujana, who reserved orders after hearing detailed arguments from both sides.

Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, appearing for Khera, argued that the case primarily related to alleged defamation and did not warrant arrest. He also alleged political vendetta and misuse of legal provisions.

Singhvi submitted that Khera is a public figure and not a flight risk and questioned the need for custodial interrogation. He also argued that multiple charges had been invoked unnecessarily.

Opposing the plea, Assam Advocate General Devajit Saikia submitted that the case involved serious allegations including forgery and fabrication of documents and was not limited to defamation.

He also questioned the maintainability of the petition before the Telangana High Court, stating that the petitioner could have approached courts in Assam or Delhi.

According to case details, the FIR was registered following allegations made by Khera during a press conference regarding the Assam Chief Minister’s wife.

After hearing the submissions, the court reserved its orders.
