Hooghly, 03 April (H.S.): In a significant development amid the West Bengal Assembly Elections, BJP candidate Swaraj Ghosh visited the residence of a critically ill Trinamool Congress (TMC) panchayat member on Friday, bringing a humanitarian issue into the political spotlight.

The TMC member, Aparna Patra, has reportedly been in a coma for the past one and a half years. She is a panchayat member from Sugandha under the Chuchura Assembly constituency, while her parental home is in Mahanad village under Saptagram.

Aparna’s father, Rabin Majhi, alleged that despite having a health card, his daughter has not received proper medical treatment. He further claimed that when he approached local MLA Asit Majumdar for help, he was turned away. The family also blamed medical negligence for her condition.

According to the family, Aparna slipped into a coma on January 6, 2025, while giving birth to a baby girl at a private nursing home in Chinsurah. Since then, her condition has not improved. Her father has reportedly sold his vehicle and land to fund her treatment, and the family is now struggling financially to continue medical care. A hospital-like setup has been created at home to support her condition.

During his visit, Swaraj Ghosh assured the family of all possible assistance. He stated that humanity comes first and that it is his duty to stand by people in distress, irrespective of political affiliations. He also criticized the ruling party, alleging that it had failed to support one of its own members.

Responding to the allegations, Asit Majumdar said that the situation is indeed unfortunate but maintained that the party has extended help to the family, which they are aware of. He added that there is nothing wrong in political opponents visiting the family.
