Imphal, 26 April (HS): Amid ongoing law and order challenges and sporadic violence in Manipur, police have intensified their crackdown on illegal narcotics and smuggling activities. In a major operation, a 21-year-old youth was arrested in Imphal East district with a large quantity of codeine-based cough syrup, while in a separate operation, seven vehicles suspected of transporting petroleum products towards the border town of Moreh were intercepted.

According to information released by Manipur Police Headquarters on Sunday, the accused, identified as Mohammad Warish (21), a resident of Hatta Golapati area near the government hospital in Imphal East, was taken into custody on April 25. Police recovered a total of 151 bottles of “Codiva” cough syrup from his possession.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the seized bottles contained codeine phosphate, a controlled substance with limited medical use but widely misused as an intoxicant. Due to its abuse potential, the substance is strictly regulated under narcotics laws. Police are now probing the source of the consignment and the network involved in its intended distribution.

On the same day, in a separate operation, police intercepted seven vehicles suspected of carrying petroleum products towards the border town of Moreh. During the search, officials recovered 48 plastic containers filled with diesel or related fuel.

The intercepted vehicles included several Maruti Eeco vans, a Tata Yoddha and a Bolero pick-up. The drivers, all residents of Chandel and Tengnoupal districts, have been detained for questioning.

Authorities have initiated verification of vehicle documents and are examining the source of the fuel. Initial findings suggest that the consignment may have been intended for illegal cross-border trade, a recurring issue in border areas due to price differences and supply restrictions.

Police stated that investigation is underway to identify the entire network and apprehend others involved. Such operations will continue as part of efforts to maintain peace and security in the state.------------
