Sonitpur (Assam), 24 April (HS): Four alleged cattle thieves were apprehended by locals while attempting to steal a cow in the Rupajuli Tea Estate under Rangapara Police Station in Assam’s Sonitpur district.

According to police, the incident occurred around 12 noon at Line No. 13 of the tea estate, when a group of four individuals was transporting livestock in a Mahindra Scorpio vehicle (AR-01J-8987). Acting on information, alert residents intercepted the vehicle and caught the suspects red-handed.

The accused were reportedly pulled out of the vehicle and beaten by an angry crowd, leaving them unconscious. Tea garden workers later handed over the four individuals to the Rangapara Police.

The arrested persons have been identified as Saheb Ali from Dighliati and Zakir Hussain, Siraj Hussain and Saiful Haque from Parua Gutlung in Tezpur.

The rescued cow belongs to a local resident, identified as Daniel Bagh of Rupajuli Tea Estate. Police have registered a case (No. 26/26) in connection with the incident and initiated an investigation. Legal procedures are underway to send the accused to judicial custody.

Notably, recurring incidents of cattle theft in the Rangapara area have raised concerns among residents, prompting heightened vigilance by the local community.-----------
