New Delhi, 15 April (H.S.): Congress leader Pawan Khedda has suffered a setback from the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court has stayed the one‑week transit anticipatory bail granted to Pawan Khedda by the Telangana High Court.
The Assam government had approached the Supreme Court against this Telangana High Court order, arguing that the Telangana High Court did not have territorial jurisdiction to hear this case.
On the Assam government’s petition, the Supreme Court has issued a notice to Pawan Khedda.
The Court has directed Pawan Khedda to file his reply within three weeks.
The Supreme Court has clarified that if Pawan Khedda so wishes, he may approach a court within the Assam jurisdiction for bail.
Such a court can then pass an order on bail on the merits of the case; today’s order of the Supreme Court will not stand as a bar.
The Telangana High Court, on 10 April, had heard Pawan Khedda’s petition and ordered one week of transit anticipatory bail.
In fact, after an FIR was registered in Assam, the Assam Police conducted a raid on 7 April at Pawan Khedda’s residence in Delhi, but he was not found at his residence at that time.
