Kolkata, 08 March (H.S.): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee continued her sit-in protest for the second consecutive day at Dharmatala in Kolkata on Saturday, alleging a conspiracy by the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Election Commission to deprive voters in the state of their franchise.
The protest began just ahead of the proposed visit of the full bench of the Election Commission of India to Kolkata. The demonstration is being held daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
The ruling All India Trinamool Congress has alleged that the ongoing special intensive revision of the electoral rolls ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections is being conducted in a hurried and disorganised manner.
Addressing supporters at the protest venue, Banerjee said the movement would continue until the rights of voters in West Bengal are protected. She also claimed that the alleged conspiracy involving the BJP and the Election Commission would be exposed before the public.
Several senior Trinamool Congress leaders, along with members of the intelligentsia, artists and people from various social sectors, were present on the stage during the protest.
The party’s national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee also addressed the gathering, alleging that attempts were being made to remove a large number of names from the voter list, which could affect the democratic process.
He further said that with lakhs of names reportedly removed from the final list and many voters placed under the “decision pending” category, uncertainty had arisen over their participation in the upcoming Assembly elections.
The Trinamool Congress has demanded that the Election Commission ensure transparency in the revision process and safeguard the rights of voters in the state.
