Kolkata, 26 March (H.S.): Amid rising temperatures and uncomfortable humidity, the weather office has forecast thunderstorms and rain in several parts of West Bengal over the next few days, bringing likely relief from the prevailing heat.

According to the Met department, five districts in south Bengal are likely to experience Kalbaisakhi (nor’wester) conditions on Friday, accompanied by gusty winds, heavy rain and lightning. On Thursday as well, a few places in the state may witness light to moderate rain with thunder activity.

Officials said temperatures have been on the rise since February this year, leading to sultry conditions, especially during the morning hours. Intermittent rainfall over the past few days, however, has provided brief respite.

The forecast indicates that wind speeds may reach 50-60 kmph in parts of south Bengal on Friday, along with the possibility of lightning and hailstorms. On Saturday, rainfall is expected to continue in parts of Purulia, Bankura, Jhargram, Paschim Medinipur and Paschim Bardhaman districts.

Kolkata and adjoining areas may witness gusty winds with speeds of 40-50 kmph during this period. North Bengal districts are also likely to receive widespread rainfall, the Met office said.

Weather conditions are expected to gradually improve from Sunday afternoon onwards, it added, while advising people to remain cautious in view of possible thunderstorms and lightning.
