Hooghly, 16 March (H.S.): Three persons were killed and a driver critically injured after a speeding car crashed into trees in Hooghly district early Monday, the police said.

The accident took place at Sonadar Math area under Polba police station along the Chuchura–Tarakeswar Road, they said, adding that the incident was captured on CCTV cameras in the locality.

According to police and local sources, the car was travelling at high speed from Dadpur towards Chuchura when the driver lost control after the vehicle hit a dog crossing the road.

The car first rammed into a tree on one side of the road and then veered across to hit another tree before coming to a halt, officials said.

Four persons were travelling in the vehicle. Three of them died in the accident while the driver sustained critical injuries.

The deceased were identified as Yogita Rana (21), a resident of Haryana, Jyoti Biswas (21), a resident of Ranaghat, and Sheikh Hasib Ahmed of Dadpur. The injured driver was identified as Syed Sagir Hossain.

The police said the two women worked as dancers at a bar in Dadpur and were returning to Chinsurah with the others after having dinner at a roadside eatery in the Gurap area.

Patrolling personnel from the local police station reached the spot soon after the crash, rescued the occupants and rushed them to the Imambara District Hospital in Chinsurah.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (D&T), Hooghly Rural Police, Priyabrat Bakshi said three persons succumbed to their injuries, while the driver was undergoing treatment in critical condition.

The police have initiated an investigation into the incident, he added.
