Kolkata, 04 February (H.S.): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has once again approached the Calcutta High Court in connection with the Sandeshkhali issue, alleging that its party workers and supporters are being deliberately implicated in false and fabricated cases.

In its petition, the BJP claimed that the police have registered multiple first information reports against its workers in the Sandeshkhali area of North 24 Parganas district. The names of several party workers, including BJP leader Gangadhar Koyal, have been mentioned in these cases. The High Court admitted the petition on Wednesday, and the matter is likely to be heard on Thursday.

The BJP alleged that arms-related cases have been filed against some of its workers, while others have been booked in multiple cases involving cognisable offences. The party maintained that these actions are politically motivated and aimed at harassing its workers.

Earlier, during the hearing of a petition challenging the FIRs, the state government, through the Advocate General, had given a verbal assurance to the High Court that no coercive or harsh action would be taken against the BJP workers concerned. However, in the latest petition, the BJP said that despite these assurances, party workers and supporters are continuing to receive summonses and notices and are being subjected to harassment.

The BJP also alleged before the court that its workers are being threatened with arrest. The matter has been placed before the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court, Sujoy Paul, and an application seeking an urgent hearing has been filed.

It may be recalled that during the Sandeshkhali incident, a case was registered against BJP leader Mampi Das, in which the Calcutta High Court granted her unconditional bail. Separately, BJP leader Gangadhar Koyal had earlier approached the High Court alleging circulation of fake videos related to the Sandeshkhali issue. In that case, Justice Jay Sengupta had observed that no coercive action should be taken against Koyal.

The BJP has now once again moved the Calcutta High Court seeking relief in connection with cases registered against its workers in the Sandeshkhali matter.
