Kochi, 17 Feb (H.S.):Malayalam actor Jayaram is expected to appear before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) today at its Kochi office for questioning in connection with the alleged Sabarimala gold misappropriation case. The central agency had issued a summons directing him to present himself as part of its ongoing probe into suspected financial irregularities linked to the case.
The ED is seeking clarity on Jayaram’s association with the first accused, Unnikrishnan Potti. Investigators are examining whether any financial gains were made by the accused through the alleged misuse of gold connected to the Sabarimala temple. Sources indicate that the summons relates specifically to suspected financial transactions between the actor and Potti.
According to investigators, during the period of construction-related works at Sabarimala, certain temple components — including wooden planks and doors — were allegedly taken by Potti to various locations to conduct poojas and prayer ceremonies. One such ritual was reportedly held at Jayaram’s residence in Chennai, a detail that has drawn the attention of central agencies.
Earlier, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) had questioned Jayaram in connection with the case. During the inquiry, the actor acknowledged that he was acquainted with Unnikrishnan Potti and stated that their association began through meetings at Sabarimala. However, he firmly denied any involvement in the alleged fraud. In his statement to the SIT, Jayaram said he had participated in three rituals in which the planks were worshipped and confirmed that Potti had visited his residence multiple times. He maintained that he had no role in any financial misconduct.
Meanwhile, in a related development, another accused in the case, K.P. Shankardas, has filed a fresh bail petition before the Kollam Vigilance Court. Citing health concerns and other grounds, Shankardas has sought relief from custody. He was formally arrested by the SIT on January 14 while undergoing treatment at a hospital. His earlier anticipatory bail plea had been rejected. The court is expected to consider his latest bail application soon.
The case continues to attract widespread public and legal attention as multiple agencies pursue parallel investigations into the alleged gold misappropriation.
