Tinsukia (Assam), 01 November (HS): Two leopard cubs, rescued from near a residential area in Margherita in Assam’s Tinsukia district, are receiving specialised care following an unsuccessful attempt to reunite them with their mother.
Assam Forest Minister Jayant Mallabarua shared the information in a social media post on Sunday, highlighting the Forest Department’s efforts to protect vulnerable wildlife and promote peaceful coexistence between humans and animals.
The male and female cubs, estimated to be two to three months old, were rescued this week by forest officials in the Margherita East Range under the Digboi Forest Division.
According to the minister, an adult female leopard had earlier been spotted in the same locality and was subsequently released into Dehing Patkai National Park. Suspecting that the leopard could be the cubs’ mother, forest officials made efforts to reunite them with her. However, the attempt was unsuccessful.
The cubs are currently under the care of the IFAW-WTI Mobile Veterinary Service Unit–Eastern Assam (MVS-EA), which is working in coordination with the Assam Forest Department with support from the Ashrayhasta Trust.
Minister said the cubs would require specialised attention and appropriate wildlife management measures. He also stressed that protecting wildlife was a shared responsibility and urged people to report wildlife sightings promptly and avoid unnecessary interference with wild animals.
He said every rescue provided an opportunity to protect wildlife and called for responsible efforts to ensure the safe coexistence of humans and animals.-----------
