Bhubaneswar, 01 November (H.S.): In view of the possibility of heavy rainfall and adverse weather conditions in Odisha due to the anticipated Cyclone ‘Murasu’, the Fisheries Directorate has initiated a series of precautionary measures to ensure the safety of fishermen along the state’s coastline.
Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea or coastal waters from November 2 to 4. Those already out at sea have been directed to return to shore immediately. Public announcements through loudspeakers are being made in coastal areas to alert fishing communities about the impending weather conditions.
All fishing boats and trawlers have also been instructed to remain securely anchored at the nearest designated fish landing centres or fishing harbours to prevent damage during the adverse weather.
District Fisheries Officers and Marine Fisheries Officers have been directed to inform and sensitise local boat owners’ associations, trawler owners’ associations and marine fisheries cooperative societies about the possibility of heavy rainfall and the precautionary measures to be followed.
Twenty-four-hour control rooms have been opened at all district fisheries offices to monitor the situation. District officials have been instructed to send regular updates to the Directorate of Fisheries in Cuttack.
The department has also directed all its officers and staff to remain on duty during this period. No official or employee will be permitted to take leave or leave their headquarters without authorisation.
Sagar Mitras and Assistant Fisheries Officers have been deployed at various fishing harbours and ports to spread awareness among fishermen and ensure compliance with safety advisories.
The Fisheries and Animal Resources Development Department has accorded top priority to the safety of fishing communities and directed officials to maintain close coordination and remain vigilant throughout the period of the weather alert.
