Silchar (Assam), 06 October (HS): The BJP has won 32 of the 42 wards in the first Silchar Municipal Corporation election after the recounting of votes in two wards altered the initial results. The BJP had initially secured 34 wards, but its tally fell to 32 after the recount.
The recount was conducted following demands raised by the BJP and Congress over the results in two wards. After the exercise, Congress won Ward 41, while an Independent candidate secured Ward 29.
The BJP had already won Wards 9 and 20 unopposed, while polling was held in the remaining 40 wards. The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), an ally of the BJP-led NDA, won two wards—16 and 26.
Congress secured two wards, 30 and 41, while Independent candidates won six wards—1, 19, 24, 25, 29 and 42. The results give the BJP-led alliance a majority in the 42-member civic body.
The election was the first for the Silchar Municipal Corporation after the erstwhile municipal board was upgraded to a 42-ward corporation. The corporation became operational in June 2025.---------------
