Mumbai, 03 October (H.S.): Terminal 1 at Mumbai Airport will be shut down in a phased manner from October 25, with flights to be shifted to Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIAL) and Terminal 2 at Mumbai Airport, according to Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL).

Around one-third of the flights will shift to NMIAL, while the remaining flights will shift to Terminal 2. The redevelopment of Terminal 1 will also be carried out in phases.

In line with the Airports Economic Regulatory Authority (AERA) tariff order, Terminal 1 at Mumbai Airport is scheduled for demolition and reconstruction during the current control period. The demolition work was originally planned to commence in mid-2025 but was voluntarily deferred by MIAL due to the absence of an alternative operating facility for airlines.

With NMIAL becoming operational, airlines now have an alternative option within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. MIAL said stakeholders, including airlines, have been informed that the redevelopment of Terminal 1 will commence in January 2027.

Airlines may choose to relocate their operations to NMIAL or temporarily suspend operations effective October 25 until the new Terminal 1 at MIAL is commissioned in 2029-30.

MIAL said the transition would be temporary and that it would honour airlines' historic slot rights once the new terminal becomes operational.
