Departmental teams keep a strict vigil on sweets, gift

packs, LPG, edible oil, flour, jewelers and paint establishments

Lucknow, Oct 29 (HS): In view of the major festivals of the

month of October and November (Diwali, Govardhan Puja, Bhaiyadooj and Chhath),

to prevent malpractices in weighing (short weighing) and charging more than MRP

on packaged goods from consumers in the market, an intensive special checking

campaign run by the Legal Metrology Department, Uttar Pradesh is going on in

full swing in the entire state. This special campaign which started on 26

October 2026 will continue till 31 October in its first phase. After this, a

comprehensive checking campaign will be run in the second phase from 02

November to 05 November 2026.

As directed by Controller of Legal Metrology Amandeep Duli,

the department is fully active in cracking down on shopkeepers and

establishments taking undue advantage of the festive crowds and excessive

shopping. In all districts of the state, teams of sub-controllers, assistant

controllers, senior inspectors and inspectors are conducting regular

inspections in their respective areas as well as surprise inspections in the

markets.

Under this campaign, departmental teams are conducting

intensive inspections in six sectors, particularly those where there is a risk

of malpractice due to high festive demand. These include sweets and gift packs,

where the weight of the sweets and the packaging itself is being checked for

underweight and the declarations on gift hampers. Second, LPG is being

investigated, where the actual weight of gas in domestic and commercial

cylinders is being checked. Vegetable oil and ghee are in third place, where

the net quantity and marked price on packaged edible oil and ghee packets and

tins are being checked. The fourth sector is flour, refined flour, and semolina

packets, where the weight of packaged grains and flour bags and packets is

being verified. Fifth, jewelers' establishments are being inspected, where the

electronic scales and weighing scales used in weighing jewelry in the bullion

market are being verified and the seals are being checked. Paint materials have

been included as the sixth and final sector, in which the quantity and price

declared on the paint cans used in home decoration and whitewashing are being

checked.
