Srinagar, Oct 29 (HS): A man was run over and killed by a parcel train near Machuwa on the outskirts of Srinagar on Thursday morning, sources said.
The man was identified as Jhon Mohammad, a resident of Reasi district in Jammu division.
The exact circumstances that led to the accident are being verified, the sources said. The body was later removed from the track, and an investigation is on.
Parcel trains have become an important link for the Valley’s trade. Northern Railway’s Jammu Division introduced a Joint Parcel Product-Rapid Cargo Service train between Budgam and Adarsh Nagar in Delhi on April 17 this year on a trial basis, to carry fruit, walnuts and handicrafts to markets across the country in about 23 to 24 hours, as a faster alternative to road transport.
The service is regarded as a lifeline for the Valley, particularly during spells of rough weather, when road connectivity is disrupted.
