Kolkata, 26 October (H.S.): West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari paid rich tributes to prominent freedom fighter and nationalist leader 'Deshpran' Birendranath Sasmal on the occasion of his birth anniversary on Monday morning. Taking to social media, the Chief Minister fondly remembered the iconic leader's profound contributions to the nation.

Born on October 26, 1881, in Chandibheti village under the Kanthi (Contai) sub-division of Purba Medinipur district, Birendranath Sasmal emerged as one of the stalwarts of the Indian independence movement. His immense influence and grassroots leadership earned him the revered moniker of the 'Uncrowned King of Medinipur'.

Sacrificing a successful legal career, Sasmal plunged entirely into the freedom struggle, playing a highly active role in pivotal events like the Non-Cooperation Movement and the Salt Satyagraha. He successfully spearheaded the anti-Union Board tax movement in Medinipur, striking a significant blow against British administrative policies. Furthermore, he utilized his legal acumen to defend numerous freedom fighters in court without charge.

Beyond his direct role in the independence struggle, Sasmal served as the President of the Bengal Provincial Congress Committee and tirelessly championed the rights of the agrarian community. In recognition of his selfless dedication and sacrifice for the motherland, he was bestowed with the title of 'Deshpran' (Soul of the Country). The visionary leader passed away on November 24, 1934.
