Kochi, 23 Oct(H.S.): Police have invoked the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act against Ebin Paul, who is in judicial custody in connection with a fire allegedly set outside a synagogue in Kochi. The National Investigation Agency is expected to take over the probe, given the seriousness of the allegations.
Police have registered four cases against Paul, and investigators suspect his involvement in attacks at three locations. Besides the synagogue incident, he allegedly set fire to a used-car showroom in Muvattupuzha and an unoccupied house.
Investigators decided to invoke Sections 16 and 18 of the UAPA, which concern punishment for terrorist acts and conspiracy related to such activities. The suspected links between the incidents prompted police to examine whether they formed part of a coordinated operation.
As part of efforts to establish Paul’s background and contacts, an investigation team recently visited the educational institution where he studied in Pune. Officers collected information about his time there and his circle of acquaintances.
According to police, Paul claimed during questioning that he carried out the acts on instructions from a person he referred to as his “boss”. He also named an individual called “Vikram” as someone who allegedly directed him.
Investigators are examining whether Vikram and the person described as the “boss” are the same individual. They are also probing whether the alleged instructions originated overseas. Neither the identity of the suspected handler nor any foreign connection has been established.
Police are currently focusing on Paul’s mobile phone, which will undergo detailed forensic examination. Investigators hope its contents will help establish his communications, identify possible associates and clarify whether others were involved in planning the incidents.
The investigation team may seek his custody again for further questioning if required. Forensic findings and verification of his statements are expected to guide the next stage of investigation.
