PM Modi to Unveil Development Projects Worth Over Rs 13,000 Crore in Chennai, Boosting Infrastructure and Connectivity

New Delhi, 10 October (H.S.): Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu, on Sunday to inaugurate development projects and lay the foundation stones for initiatives worth more than Rs 13,000 crore. The projects span several key sectors, including metro rail, national highways, railways, ports, petroleum and education.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), Modi will inaugurate the Poonamallee–Vadapalani section of Phase II of the Chennai Metro Rail project. Constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 4,900 crore, the section includes a 3.7-kilometre-long double-decker structure and is equipped with a modern signalling system compatible with driverless operations.

The opening of this section is expected to improve connectivity between Chennai’s western suburbs and central areas while reducing travel times for commuters.

PM Modi will also lay the foundation stones for and inaugurate national highway projects worth approximately Rs 3,700 crore in Tamil Nadu. These include a 36-kilometre, four-lane stretch between Vadugapatti and Therku Venganallur on National Highway 744, and a 30-kilometre, four-lane section of the Madurai Ring Road.

The Prime Minister will also lay the foundation stone for the Tiruvarur bypass on the Nagapattinam–Thanjavur section of National Highway 83. These projects are expected to improve traffic flow, ease congestion and strengthen regional connectivity.

Railway infrastructure projects worth over Rs 750 crore to be dedicated to the nation

The Prime Minister will dedicate railway infrastructure projects worth more than Rs 750 crore to the nation. These include the Karaikal–Peralam railway line and three railway flyovers in Coimbatore and neighbouring areas.

He will also inaugurate five redeveloped railway stations under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, located at Palani, Vellore Cantonment, Ambasamudram, Paramakudi and Namakkal.

The projects are expected to strengthen rail connectivity, improve passenger convenience and reduce traffic congestion and waiting times at railway level crossings.

Port development initiatives to enhance cargo handling and logistics

In the port sector, PM Modi will inaugurate several projects and lay the foundation stones for others at Chennai Port, Kamarajar Port and V.O. Chidambaranar Port.

At Chennai Port, the projects to be inaugurated include a paved storage area, four import-export warehouses, an upgraded cruise terminal and a seafarers’ club.

At V.O. Chidambaranar Port, eight major development projects are expected to increase cargo and container-handling capacity and improve logistics infrastructure.

At Kamarajar Port, the Prime Minister will inaugurate the Coal Berth-3 project and lay the foundation stone for capital dredging work associated with the second part of the first phase of the container terminal. These initiatives are expected to strengthen port infrastructure and improve the efficiency of maritime operations.

Rs 1,620-crore lubricant base oil project at Manali refinery

Modi will also lay the foundation stone for a lubricant base oil production project at the existing Manali refinery of Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited (CPCL).

Estimated to cost approximately Rs 1,620 crore, the project will have an annual production capacity of 270,000 metric tonnes. It will manufacture Group II and Group III lubricant base oils, which are essential for producing high-quality lubricants in India.

The initiative is expected to strengthen domestic production capabilities and support the availability of advanced lubricant materials for industrial and automotive applications.

IIT Madras brain centre to advance human brain research

The Prime Minister will dedicate the Sudha Gopalakrishnan Brain Centre at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) to the nation.

He will also launch the centre’s global scientific initiative to develop cellular-resolution, three-dimensional atlases of more than 100 human brains, covering different stages of life, from embryonic development to old age.

On the occasion, an atlas of the human brain affected by ischaemic stroke, titled ‘C-Stroke’, will also be released. It contains more than 1,000 annotated microscopic sections of stroke-affected brain tissue. The resource is expected to help researchers identify new therapeutic targets and advance scientific understanding of the condition.

PM to attend golden jubilee celebrations of Chennai school

PM Modi will also attend the golden jubilee celebrations of Jaigopal Garodia Hindu Vidyalaya Matriculation Higher Secondary School in Chennai and address the gathering. The event will mark five decades of the institution’s contribution to education.

Prime Minister’s schedule in Chennai

According to the announced programme,PM Modi will undertake a metro rail journey at approximately 11:30 a.m., travelling from Poonamallee Bypass station towards the Poonamallee Bypass station.

At around 12:15 p.m., he will visit the Jalakandeeswarar Temple in Chennai for darshan and prayers and tour the brain research centre at IIT Madras.

At approximately 1:30 p.m., he will participate in the programme associated with the development projects. At 3 p.m., he will attend the golden jubilee celebrations of Jaigopal Garodia Hindu Vidyalaya Matriculation Higher Secondary School.

The visit is expected to mark a significant push for Tamil Nadu’s infrastructure development, with projects spanning urban mobility, highways, rail connectivity, maritime logistics, petroleum production and advanced scientific research.
