Mumbai, 08 January (HS): Political tensions escalated in Maharashtra ahead of the January 15 local body elections as incidents of violence during campaigning and controversy over alleged cross-party alliances were reported from different parts of the state.
Several leaders from parties including Shiv Sena and AIMIM reported attacks while campaigning. A Shiv Sena leader was allegedly attacked with a knife in Mumbai’s Bandra area, while another reported stone pelting on his vehicle during an election meeting in Pune. AIMIM leaders alleged their rally in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar was attacked by unidentified persons, leaving several supporters injured.
Meanwhile, political controversy surfaced in Ambernath after reports of local-level alliances between rival parties. Congress suspended its local leadership in the town, citing an unauthorised arrangement that caused embarrassment to the party.
The party later denied any formal alliance, stating that local workers had come together without official approval.
The BJP also rejected claims of any alliance with Congress or AIMIM, warning of strict disciplinary action against any local leaders found violating party norms.
Elections to 29 municipal corporations across Maharashtra will be held on January 15, with 2,869 seats at stake. Counting of votes is scheduled for January 16, according to the State Election Commission.
