Four months after Monsoon, Chuchura residents still wading through water

Hooghly, 07 January (H.S.): Nearly four months have passed since the monsoon season ended, and the new year has begun, but the residents of Rabindranagar Paschimpara in Chuchura area of Hooghly district are still grappling with severe waterlogging. Residents are forced to navigate through stagnant, dirty water on the roads every day. The problem has worsened in winter, as they still have to wade through the water to leave their homes in the cold weather.

Local residents alleged that they applied under the Amader Para, Amader Samadhan (Our Neighborhood, Our Solution) scheme, but received no assistance. Finally, they have appealed to local MLA Asit Majumdar for a solution to the problem.

According to local residents, the waterlogging problem in this area is years old, and the roads remain waterlogged almost throughout the year. Several people have been injured after slipping and falling on the moss-covered and slippery roads. Skin diseases are spreading due to constant contact with the dirty water, and there is also a persistent problem with mosquitoes and flies. People say they have informed the Kodalia-1 Gram Panchayat about the problem several times, but no concrete solution has been found yet.

In this regard, Debashish Chakraborty, the Deputy Head of Kodalia-1 Gram Panchayat, said that he is aware of the problem. He said that attempts were made to drain the water, but the roads are getting waterlogged again. He said that previously, drains were repaired under the 100-day employment scheme, but the situation has worsened since the central government discontinued that scheme. He appealed to the public to be vigilant and refrain from throwing plastic waste into the drains so that the drainage system is not affected.

The Deputy Head further added that a plan to improve this road has been made under the 'Pathashree' project. The road will be elevated and the drainage system improved at a cost of approximately 26 lakh rupees. He assured that the problem would be resolved within the next two months.

Meanwhile, MLA Asit Majumdar said on Wednesday that after becoming an MLA, he had repaired most of the roads in the Rabindranagar area, but he was unaware of the dilapidated condition of this particular road. After receiving complaints from local residents, he assured them that he would visit the site soon to inspect the situation and take the necessary steps for a quick resolution of the problem.
