
Guwahati, 7 January (HS): The Railway Protection Force (RPF) of Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) delivered an impressive, people-centric performance in December 2025, significantly enhancing passenger safety, security enforcement and humanitarian assistance across the zone. Through proactive vigilance, swift response and coordinated operations, the RPF reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring safe, secure and compassionate rail travel.
During the month, RPF personnel apprehended 17 persons involved in theft cases and recovered 17 stolen mobile phones valued at around ₹2.22 lakh, which were handed over to the Government Railway Police (GRP). In a notable act of alertness, RPF staff at Guwahati Railway Station saved the life of a woman passenger who slipped while boarding Train No. 13125 UP, averting a serious accident.
Humanitarian service remained a key focus, with the RPF rescuing 36 minor boys and girls and three women during December and handing them over to Childline, concerned NGOs and GRP for care and rehabilitation. RPF teams also extended timely assistance to two pregnant women during childbirth at New Jalpaiguri and Rangiya stations.
Strengthening passenger confidence through enforcement, five persons were arrested for stone pelting on running trains. Cleanliness drives resulted in the prosecution of 1,722 offenders for littering, with fines amounting to about ₹2.29 lakh. Overall, 2,669 cases were registered under the Railways Act, leading to the arrest and prosecution of 2,632 offenders and the realization of fines worth approximately ₹3.36 lakh.
The RPF also intensified action against organized crime and smuggling. Five touts were arrested with the seizure of 13 railway tickets. In a major anti-narcotics drive, 32 cases were detected, leading to the recovery of ganja, heroin, brown sugar and cough syrup valued at about Rs. 3.16 crore and the arrest of 13 persons. Additionally, 39 cases of illicit liquor smuggling were detected, with 2,960 bottles worth around ₹2.98 lakh seized.
Passenger facilitation remained a priority as the RPF assisted the Commercial Department in apprehending 325 ticketless travellers and realizing fines of ₹4.85 lakh. During the period, 293 persons were prosecuted for smoking violations, while 118 left-behind luggage items valued at approximately ₹26.80 lakh were recovered and safely returned to passengers.
In support of safe and obstruction-free rail operations, the RPF extended assistance to the Engineering Department in removing 115 encroachments at various locations.
