Thrissur, 04 Jan (H.S.):A massive fire broke out at the two-wheeler parking facility of Thrissur Railway Station early on Saturday morning, gutting more than 200 motorcycles and scooters and triggering panic among commuters.
The blaze was reported around 6.45 a.m. at the parking area near Platform No. 2, which usually accommodates over 500 two-wheelers daily. According to preliminary accounts, flames spread rapidly through the tightly packed vehicles, with the presence of fuel significantly intensifying the fire and causing extensive damage within minutes.
Personnel from the Fire and Rescue Services rushed to the spot soon after receiving the alert. Multiple fire tenders were deployed, and firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control after nearly 30 minutes of intensive efforts. Thick smoke lingered in the area for some time, causing inconvenience to passengers and station staff.
Eyewitnesses said several vehicles were completely destroyed, while many others sustained partial damage. Owners of the parked two-wheelers, many of them daily commuters, rushed to the site after hearing about the incident, only to find their vehicles reduced to charred remains. Authorities are still assessing the exact number of vehicles damaged.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined. Officials said a detailed investigation will be conducted to ascertain whether an electrical short circuit, fuel leakage, or any other factor triggered the blaze. CCTV footage from the railway station premises is expected to play a crucial role in the probe.
Railway authorities confirmed that train services were not affected. Although the parking area is located close to the track used by Guruvayur-bound trains, timely intervention ensured that the fire did not spread to railway infrastructure. The incident has once again raised concerns over fire safety measures at crowded public facilities.
