Guwahati, 28 January (HS): Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday paid rich tributes to the martyred farmers of the historic Patharughat Battle of 1894, describing the episode as a proud yet poignant chapter in the history of Assam and India.

In a message on the occasion of Patharughat Ron Smriti Diwas, the Chief Minister said the battle remains an immortal reminder of the courage, unity and supreme sacrifice of Assam’s farmers who stood firmly against colonial injustice. He noted that the sacrifice made by the farmers during the Patharughat uprising continues to live on in the collective conscience of the people.

Dr Sarma said the unparalleled patriotism and sacrifice of the martyred farmers would continue to inspire generations and serve as a source of strength in the fight for justice and self-respect. He added that the memory of Patharughat is not just a historical event, but a symbol of resistance, dignity and unwavering resolve of the people of Assam.-----------
