Chennai, 22 January (H.S.) : Bharatiya Janata Party, BJP, leader K Annamalai has launched a scathing attack on the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, DMK, accusing the party of lacking respect for the judiciary in Tamil Nadu.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Annamalai alleged that the state government has consistently failed to implement several key court orders, specifically highlighting the recent Tirupparankundram temple case.
He claimed that the DMK led administration is deliberately ignoring the directions of the Madras High Court regarding the lighting of the Karthigai Deepam at the Deepathoon, which is an ancient stone pillar atop the Tirupparankundram hills. The BJP leader stated that people are closely watching these atrocities and suggested that the public would have to endure such actions for only a limited period before seeking a change.
Annamalai further intensified his criticism by calling for the registration of an FIR against Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin over his past remarks regarding Sanatan Dharma.
He noted that recent judicial observations have flagged such comments as inappropriate and questioned why no action has been taken by the state police. According to the BJP leader, no judicial verdict seems acceptable to the DMK or the Left parties if it does not favor the government.
He alleged that when judges do not act according to the wishes of the ruling party, they are often targeted or abused based on their caste and religion. The controversy stems from a Madras High Court division bench order that upheld a single judge's directive to allow temple authorities to light a lamp at the hillock, rejecting the state's concerns about communal harmony and law and order as an imaginary ghost.
Annamalai maintained that the state government is misusing its power to pursue a political agenda at the expense of religious traditions.
