Taipei, August 14 (HS): Tensions in the Taiwan Strait flared again on Wednesday as Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense (MND) reported a sharp rise in Chinese military movements near the island.

By 6:00 a.m. local time, Taiwan detected eight Chinese military aircraft and two naval vessels operating aggressively within its surrounding waters. Several aircraft crossed the median line — the unofficial maritime boundary — and entered the island’s northern and southwestern Air Defense Identification Zones (ADIZ).

The MND said it is maintaining tight surveillance of the situation and has taken “appropriate countermeasures” in response to the heightened activity.

International Voices of Support

The developments have drawn strong reactions abroad. Former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson urged Western nations to stand firmly with Taiwan and strengthen economic ties with the self‑governing democracy, warning of China’s growing pressure.

Similarly, Sohei Kamiya, founder of Japan’s Sanseito Party and a sitting lawmaker, called for Tokyo to support Taiwan and remain alert to China’s infiltration tactics in Japan.

Rising Tensions in the Region

China continues to claim Taiwan as part of its territory and has stepped up military patrols and drills around the island in recent years. The latest incursion underscores the fragile security environment in the Indo‑Pacific, with Taiwan increasingly at the heart of global geopolitical friction.
