New Delhi,August 13(HS): In a landmark achievement that cements India’s position as a global renewable energy powerhouse, the nation has crossed the formidable threshold of 100 gigawatts (GW) in Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Module Manufacturing Capacity — a leap that underscores the nation’s march toward self-reliance and sustainable growth.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, hailing the feat on social media platform X, described it as “yet another milestone towards self-reliance, reflecting the success of India’s manufacturing prowess and our relentless push to popularise clean energy.”

This monumental rise — from a modest 2.3 GW in 2014 to today's staggering capacity — has been achieved under the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) policy, propelled by strategic initiatives such as the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for high-efficiency solar modules. The rapid expansion has transformed the domestic solar manufacturing sector into a globally competitive hub, capable of catering to both national and international markets.

Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, lauded the industrial and policy synergy that made this possible, noting the sharp rise in the number of manufacturers from just 21 in 2021 to over 100 today, operating 123 advanced manufacturing units. This surge directly supports India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat vision and strengthens efforts to achieve the ambitious target of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel energy capacity by 2030.

Beyond large-scale manufacturing, grassroots initiatives such as the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana are empowering households to harness solar power, bringing green energy into the daily lives of millions of citizens and decentralising the clean energy revolution.

Industry experts view the 100 GW benchmark not merely as a statistical triumph, but as a strategic pivot that positions India at the forefront of the global energy transition. The achievement sends a strong message to the world: India is not only ready to meet its domestic clean energy needs, but also to emerge as a key player in global solar supply chains.

As the sun shines brighter on India’s renewable future, the nation is poised to script a transformative chapter in sustainable development — one where economic resilience, technological innovation, and environmental stewardship move forward in harmony.
