Kolkata, 1 August (H.S.) -A shocking case of honeytrapping and cross-border crime has emerged in Kolkata, where a man was allegedly drugged and robbed by a woman he met on a matrimony site. Investigations have now revealed the involvement of a Bangladeshi national in the crime, pointing to a larger international fraud network.
According to police sources, the complaint was lodged on July 27 at the Airport Police Station by a young man who alleged that he had connected with a woman through a matrimonial platform. Their online interaction soon developed into personal meetings. On her invitation, he checked into a hotel near the Kolkata airport where, during their meeting, the woman allegedly spiked his coffee and robbed him of all his valuables while he was unconscious.
Acting swiftly on the complaint, Kolkata Police laid a trap by posing as a prospective groom on the same matrimony site. The accused woman was apprehended from a hotel in the airport area on the same night. During interrogation, she confessed to selling stolen goods to a man based in Dum Dum Cantonment, who was later identified and arrested.
The man, according to police, is a Bangladeshi national. He allegedly smuggled stolen items into Bangladesh. Investigators now suspect the involvement of a wider international crime syndicate that uses online platforms to target unsuspecting individuals.
This incident follows closely on the heels of another high-profile case involving Bangladeshi model-turned-actress Shanta Paul, who was arrested in Kolkata earlier this month. She was allegedly living in India with an expired passport and visa. What alarmed authorities further was her role as an “advisor” helping others illegally obtain Indian visas. Several sensational revelations about her activities have emerged since her arrest.
