Kolkata, 1 August (H.S.) -In a significant infrastructure boost for North Bengal ahead of the Durga Puja festival, the central government has approved the much-anticipated project to lay a third and fourth railway line between Aluabari Road and New Jalpaiguri. According to railway officials, the initiative is expected to greatly enhance rail connectivity between North Bengal, the northeastern states, and Bhutan with the rest of the country.
Officials stated that the multi-tracking project will not only increase the speed and reliability of train services but also ease congestion at major junctions. This, in turn, will lead to a smoother, faster, and more efficient railway network across the region.
Seen as a key step toward strengthening North Bengal’s core infrastructure, the project is likely to facilitate improved mobility for passengers and goods, further supporting regional economic growth and tourism. Given New Jalpaiguri’s strategic importance as a gateway to the Northeast, the additional tracks are expected to improve operational flexibility and capacity on one of the busiest routes in the region.
Railway authorities are optimistic about completing the project by the financial year 2028–29, provided all phases proceed as scheduled. Upon completion, commuters and transporters alike can expect a marked improvement in service frequency, speed, and overall rail experience along the corridor.
