Delhi, 6 July (H.S.): PM Modi has arrived in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, for the 17th BRICS Summit at the invitation of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva after concluding his productive visit to Argentina. He landed at Galeão International Airport, marking the start of a two-part visit to strengthen relations with Brazil and engage with global leaders.

On X, PM Modi posted: “Landed in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where I will participate in the BRICS Summit and then head to its capital, Brasília, for a State visit at the invitation of President Lula. Looking forward to a productive round of meetings and interactions during this visit.”

At the 17th BRICS Leaders' Summit, he will address critical global issues such as peace, security, multilateralism, artificial intelligence, climate action, health, and economic matters. Additionally, PM Modi is expected to engage in bilateral meetings during the Summit. In Brasília, he will discuss expanding the Strategic Partnership with President Lula, focusing on trade, defence, energy, space, technology, agriculture, health, and people-to-people connections.

This is Modi’s fourth visit to Brazil and 12th participation in a BRICS Summit. His previous appearances include virtual summits since October 2020 and earlier meetings in locations like Johannesburg and Goa. BRICS unites 11 significant emerging economies, accounting for about 49.5% of the global population, nearly 40% of global GDP, and approximately 26% of global trade. India previously chaired BRICS in September 2021 and October 2016, hosting over 150 events during its presidency.

Before Brazil,PM Modi's tour included Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, and Argentina, the latter being the first bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister in 57 years. Following Brazil, the final stop of his five-nation trip will be Namibia on July 9 to address its parliament.
