Guwahati, 5 July (HS): Smriti Sharan, Joint Secretary, Rural Development Ministry, Government of India, visited the Women's Safety Cell in Chandrapur area of Assam and the Gender Research Center located in the Mayong area of Morigaon district. The main objective of this visit was to review the progress of various gender-based programs and to do a field study of the social changes taking place in rural areas.

Sundita Banerjee, Advisor, National Mission Management Unit (NMMU), DAY-NRLM was also present with her. During this visit, she closely understood the role of community based organizations in the direction of women empowerment, gender equality and social change.

During the visit, the Joint Secretary interacted with the members of the Steering Committee of the Gender Research Center, representatives of CLF SAC, workers of self-help groups and officials of various government departments. She inspected the CLF office and also saw an exhibition of products prepared by women self-help groups, which showcased the skills, creativity and entrepreneurship of local women.

Members of the Gender Research Centre shared their field experiences, success stories and how gender-based work has brought positive change in the villages.

Many dignitaries including Deputy Commissioner of Morigaon, State Mission Director of Assam State Rural Livelihood Mission, Additional Superintendent of Police, Morigaon, Chief Executive Officer of Zila Parishad, Collector of Jagiroad were present at the event. Their participation made it clear that institutional coordination and collective efforts are required for gender sensitive rural development.

The visit further strengthens the ongoing gender inclusive work under the National Rural Livelihood Mission as well as the Ministry's commitment to the activism and empowerment of rural women.
