Nagaland Sounds Alert on Possible Influx Following Assam Evictions

Kohima, 22 July (HS): Amid ongoing eviction drives targeting illegal immigrants in Assam, the Nagaland government has raised concerns over a possible influx of displaced individuals into its territory and has issued an alert to all district administrations.

In an advisory dated the Office of the Commissioner, Nagaland, warned that people evicted from neighbouring Assam might attempt to enter Nagaland. All Deputy Commissioners across the state have been directed to remain on high alert and adopt preventive steps to counter any such movement.

Citing the potential risks posed by such movements, the advisory underlined the importance of protecting the state's demographic fabric. Given the current eviction drive in Assam, there is a risk of illegal immigrants trying to cross into Nagaland, it read.

The circular, signed by Joint Commissioner (Headquarters) Nokchasashi, NCS, stressed the need to uphold law and order and urged local administrations to be proactive and strategic in their response.

Further, the directive was forwarded to the Deputy Secretary to the Chief Secretary, the Home Commissioner, and all Deputy Commissioners for their awareness and necessary action.

The move comes as the region grapples with mounting anxiety over demographic shifts and unregulated border crossings driven by anti-encroachment efforts in Assam.
