Kolkata, 2 July (H.S.): Veteran Trinamool Congress MP Saugata Roy is facing a serious health crisis, with multiple complications including neurological issues, respiratory infection, kidney dysfunction, and high blood pressure. While doctors describe his condition as stable, it remains critical.
According to medical authorities, Roy is currently being fed through a Ryle’s tube due to his deteriorating condition. His potassium levels have risen to an abnormal range, adding to the complexity of his health situation. Doctors have also reported that the 78-year-old leader is suffering from severe sleep deprivation, which is further aggravating his condition.
Roy’s health declined shortly after he was scheduled to attend the inauguration ceremony of a Jagannath temple in Digha. Having had a pacemaker implanted earlier, his family chose not to take any risk after he fell ill on Akshaya Tritiya. Initially, he was admitted to a hospital in Belgharia and was later shifted to a private hospital in South Kolkata, where he has been undergoing treatment since June 22.
A special medical board has been formed to oversee his treatment, comprising senior neurologist Dr. Manoj Saha, along with Dr. Vaibhav Shett, Dr. Arindam Maitra, and Dr. Rahul Jain. The team is monitoring his condition round-the-clock. Reports state that from Monday, his health became more complicated, leading to tube feeding.
The latest medical bulletin reveals that Roy is battling a respiratory tract infection, elevated blood pressure, kidney-related ailments, and is currently on insulin. He is also suffering from back pain and facing speech difficulties. Doctors have indicated that he now requires physiotherapy support as well.
This is not the first time the senior parliamentarian has faced a health scare. On March 10, 2025, during the Budget Session in Parliament, Roy suddenly fell ill inside the Lok Sabha and had to be taken out in a wheelchair. He was rushed to Delhi’s Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, although he was discharged after his condition stabilized.
The news of his worsening health has caused deep concern among TMC leaders and supporters. Party sources say that close watch is being maintained on his condition, and senior party members are in constant touch with his family and the medical team.
