Shillong, 16 July (HS): Two Border Security Force (BSF) personnel were injured in an attack by cattle smugglers near the India-Bangladesh border in Meghalaya's East Jaintia Hills district.
An official statement issued by the BSF on Wednesday said that the incident took place near the Khasimara river in the early hours of July 12. According to the statement, a gang of about 20 smugglers was trying to take 30 to 40 cattle to Bangladesh through the river adjoining the border.
When the BSF jawans stopped them, a mob of 40 to 50 people from across the border moved towards India and started pelting stones at the jawans. Two jawans were injured in this attack.
The statement said that in self-defense, the BSF fired some air as a warning to disperse the crowd. After this all the attackers fled. BSF has recovered 13 cattle from the spot.
BSF has clarified that no laxity will be tolerated in the security of the border and smugglers are being kept under strict surveillance.
