Thane,
13 July (HS): Two employees of a recycling firm were detained on Sunday in
Maharashtra's Thane district for allegedly repackaging expired products,
including food items, for resale in the market, police said. According to an
official, Thane municipal police searched two godowns in the Dahisar district
of Shil-Daighar earlier this week and recovered 200 tons of expired
commodities. He stated that the accused, Mohammad Irfan Mohammad Munir
Chowdhary (41) and Mohammad Akram Mohammad Ismail Shaikh (58), are partners in
a Bhiwandi-based recycling and waste-handling firm. Based on a tip-off that a
recycling firm was reselling outdated items rather than destroying them, our
team raided two godowns in Dahisar on July 9 and 10, according to the official.
He
stated that the crew discovered a vast stockpile of approximately 200 tons of
expired items, which were originally despatched by an e-commerce business for
safe disposal, were being repacked and held for resale.
The
official stated that the stock contained food grains, cereals, flour, sugar,
rice, dried fruits, toilet cleansers, sanitary pads, washing powders, and
branded soaps. Labels on these products were purposely destroyed, and the
items were repackaged in plastic and gunny bags to be sold in Bhiwandi and
adjacent regions. he told reporters. According to the official, both men charged
under sections 318(4) (cheating), 336(2) (forgery), and 340(2) (presenting
counterfeit papers or records as real) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
