Barabanki,
12 July (HS): Uttar Pradesh Police detained three members of a family under the
'love jihad' legislation on Saturday after investigating charges made by a lady
from Barabanki that a man engaged in sexual contact with her on a fake promise
to marry.
The
30-year-old lady said in her complaint that a guy named Samar Singh promised
her marriage and invited her to a hotel in Lucknow where they had sexual
encounters. Police identified the man as Zeeshan, a 31-year-old Prayagraj
resident.
The
woman further accused him of deducting Rs 1.5 lakh from her in installments
following his bogus vow to marry. His
sister and brother-in-law were also detained for allegedly stealing gold
jewelry from her.
In
her complaint submitted on July 8, the woman stated that she began speaking
with Samar Singh roughly a year ago. They later fought, but they
started chatting on April 11, she claimed. His sister Shivli Khan (34) and
brother-in-law Nadeem Qureshi (36), both Lucknow residents, were also detained
for allegedly masquerading as Hindus and stealing gold items from the
complainant. RK Rana, SHO of the Kotwali police station, stated that the police
also recovered the accused's mobile phones. He stated that a chargesheet will be drafted
and handed to the court shortly.
In
Kotwali police station, a complaint has been filed under sections 69 (sexual
intercourse by fraudulent means), 318(2) (cheating), and 61(2) (a party to a
criminal conspiracy) of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita and Uttar Pradesh
Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act. Right-wing groups
frequently use the phrase 'love jihad' to accuse Muslim males of attempting to
convert Hindu women through marriage.
