Gangtok, June 5 (HS): A rescue operation began Thursday morning for tourists stranded due to natural disasters in North Sikkim and to assist local residents. Three helicopters took off from Pakyong Greenfield Airport to Chaten, carrying NDRF personnel and essential equipment. Teams from the state electricity department and Airtel were also sent to restore telecommunications and electricity services. Additionally, police personnel were dispatched to aid in restoring normalcy in affected areas. Bad weather had previously stalled helicopter flights, delaying operations; however, improved conditions allowed for rescues to commence, particularly in Lachen. Heavy rainfall caused landslides, blocking roads and halting transportation, affecting both stranded tourists and the local population's daily lives.
