Guwahati, 27 June (HS): Night ferry services connecting Guwahati and North Guwahati have been temporarily suspended in view of the dangerous situation created by heavy rains, storm and wooden logs floating in the river. The Inland Water Transport (IWT) Department on Friday announced the ferry service suspension as a safety precaution.
The Inland Water Transport Department has announced that floating wooden logs and strong river currents have created dangerous navigational conditions, due to which the authorities have suspended boats departing from Guwahati till 6:00 pm on June 27. This decision of the IWT affects thousands of daily commuters who depend on ferry services to cross the Brahmaputra, especially those who travel between Guwahati and destinations located on the northern bank.
The ferry operators emphasised that the suspension prioritises public safety and protection of property over service continuity. Recent monsoon activity has made navigation hazardous for boats and ships during evening and night hours due to strong river currents and debris including wooden logs. These conditions significantly increase the risk and affect the ability of ferry operators to maintain safe passage.
The Executive Engineer of IWT Department Guwahati said that normal operations will resume once the river conditions improve and navigational hazards are removed. Passengers planning evening journeys have been advised to make alternate arrangements or adjust their schedules for earlier departure time.
