Imphal, 24 June (HS): Due to continuous rain for two days in Noni district of Manipur, massive landslides and mudslides were reported in the early hours of Tuesday, completely disrupting traffic on Assam-Manipur National Highway-37.

According to the administration, the landslide occurred at several places around Luwangchum and Ramchung villages between New Kaifundai, Awangkhun and Makhuthong bridge. Due to this, cargo trucks coming from Silchar and empty vehicles going from Imphal to Assam were stranded on both sides. Movement on this route was completely stopped for about eight hours.

The incident is reported to have happened around 3 am on Tuesday. However, machinery of ABCI and NHIDCL remained deployed on the spot and the route was partially opened by 11 am by removing the debris.

Police informed that before this natural disaster, 265 vehicles carrying essential commodities were provided safe clearance on National Highway-37. These vehicles were allowed to cross under security cover with tight security arrangements in sensitive areas.

Here, due to continuous heavy rains, water level in Nambul and Imphal rivers has increased, causing sudden flood like situation. In view of this, the Imphal West District Administration has issued a warning to the public not to go near the river banks.

Temperature has also dropped in Manipur due to continuous rain.
