Kolkata, 02 June (H.S.) -A devastating landslide triggered by heavy rainfall struck an Indian Army camp in Sikkim, claiming the lives of three soldiers and leaving six others missing. The incident occurred around 7 PM on Sunday night in Chetan, located in the Lachen area of North Sikkim.
Confirming the tragedy on Monday afternoon, Wing Commander Himanshu Tiwari, spokesperson for the Eastern Command of the Ministry of Defence, stated that the landslide struck following intense rainfall, severely damaging the army post and sweeping away several personnel.
According to official information released by the Indian Army, three bodies have been recovered so far. The deceased have been identified as Havildar Lakhwinder Singh, Lance Naik Manish Thakur, and a porter named Abhishek Lakhra. Four others were rescued with minor injuries and are reported to be in stable condition.
Search and rescue operations are being carried out by Army teams despite challenging terrain and inclement weather conditions. The efforts to locate the six missing personnel are ongoing around the clock.
The Indian Army has paid tribute to the soldiers who lost their lives in the line of duty and expressed deep condolences to their bereaved families. It also assured that all necessary support is being extended to the affected families during this time of loss.
In a statement, the Army reiterated its unwavering commitment to the safety and welfare of its personnel and praised the resilience and dedication of its teams working relentlessly in the face of a natural disaster.
