- Himanta Biswa Sarma assures relief during Lakhimpur flood visit
Lakhimpur, 2 June (HS): Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma visited the flood-ravaged Amatala Nagar village in Lakhimpur district on Monday to assess the damage and reassure locals of swift government support.
Overwhelmed by the destruction, the chief minister said, “I came to see it right away. I feel guilty seeing the devastation caused by the flood.” His remarks came as he toured the inundated areas and interacted with residents hit by the disaster.
Sarma pledged that construction work for the benefit of the affected locals would begin after the floodwaters recede. “We are committed to rebuilding what’s been lost,” he affirmed.
Raising concern over the operations of the NEEPCO hydroelectric project in Arunachal Pradesh’s Yazali, the CM called for greater responsibility. “If water is released without prior notice, NEEPCO must provide an explanation,” he stated, emphasizing accountability.
Promising comprehensive aid, the chief minister said, “All our indigenous local people who have suffered will be helped.” He also announced that efforts to restore connectivity from Mothaur would commence Tuesday.
Helping the poor is not just our duty—it’s our responsibility, Sarma concluded, reiterating his government’s commitment to relief and recovery for flood-hit residents.
