HC grants more time for probe into illegal limestone mining in Meghalaya’s Jaintia Hills

Shillong, 9 May (HS): The Meghalaya High Court has given additional time to the state government to complete the investigation into alleged illegal limestone mining by Amrit Cement Industries Limited in the Jaintia Hills area.

In the hearing before a division bench of Chief Justice IP Mukherjee and Justice W Diengdoh, the state government sought more time to complete the investigation, which was accepted by the court.

Official sources of the Meghalaya government said on Friday that the matter is related to the PIL (IPL No. 1/2025) filed by Ranjit Chandra Goswami. The petition alleges that the company is mining limestone without a valid mining license. The court accepted this petition on February 19, considering it an informal complaint and directed the state to investigate.

According to the latest order, the investigation report has to be submitted by July 2 of the current year and its copies should be made available to all concerned parties. The court also said that all the necessary parties should be given an opportunity to be heard during the investigation process.
