New Delhi, May 9 (HS): The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has initiated action regarding the unauthorized sale of walkie-talkies. The CCPA has issued notices to 13 e-commerce companies, including Amazon and Flipkart, for the illegal sale of walkie-talkies. These measures have been taken at a time when tensions between India and Pakistan have increased, raising concerns about national security.

The Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution stated in a press release on Friday that the Central Consumer Protection Authority has taken decisive action against major e-commerce companies, including Amazon and Flipkart, for the sale of unauthorized walkie-talkie devices. The ministry noted that this action is focused on the lack of adequate information about the radio frequencies of these devices when listed on e-commerce platforms, the absence of licensing details, and the lack of Equipment Type Approval (ETA) certification.

Union Minister for Food and Consumer Affairs, Prahlad Joshi, stated in a post on 'X' that, “The sale of wireless devices that do not comply with regulations not only violates legal obligations but can also pose significant risks to national security operations.” Joshi mentioned that this violation is against several legal frameworks, including the Consumer Protection Act, the Indian Telegraph Act, and the Wireless Telegraphy Act.

The central minister added that the CCPA will issue official guidelines under Section 18(2)(L) of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, aimed at enhancing compliance and consumer protection measures in digital markets. He emphasized that sellers have been directed to strictly adhere to all applicable regulatory standards to uphold consumer rights and prevent unlawful trade practices.
