SHILLONG, 8 May (HS): With rising anxiety over India-Pakistan tensions, the Meghalaya government has asked residents to stay calm and avoid panic-driven purchases of daily essentials.

Reassuring the public, authorities stressed that the state’s food supply remains stable and well-stocked. “We have enough stocks to cater to every district, along with additional reserves,” said Food and Civil Supplies Minister Comingone Ymbon at a press briefing.

The appeal came on a day when reports of India targeting terror camps across the border sparked fear of retaliation, prompting crowds to flock to markets. By evening, many shelves in Shillong’s grocery stores were left nearly bare.

Despite government efforts to allay fears, the rush resembled past reactions seen during national emergencies. Officials, however, maintained that the present situation does not warrant alarm.

Minister Ymbon warned against opportunistic price hikes, cautioning traders and retailers. “Our price vigilance teams are active and keeping a close watch. There’s a dashboard to track any unusual pricing patterns,” he stated.

He further emphasized that if the situation worsens, the government is ready to review and respond. “Let me assure everyone- there is no immediate shortage. Hoarding or black marketing will not be tolerated,” Ymbon added.

According to the Food and Civil Supplies Department, buffer stocks have been pre-positioned in key locations, and monitoring teams have been deployed to ensure fair distribution and prevent exploitation.
