Kolkata Boy’s Posthumous Organ Donation Restores Vision to Two, Saves Child’s Life with Liver Transplant

Kolkata, 23 May (H.S.) — In a deeply moving act of generosity, the family of a 12-year-old boy from South Kolkata has given the gift of life and sight to three individuals, even after their child’s untimely passing. Umang Galada, an eighth-grade student of a reputed English-medium school and a resident of Alipore, succumbed to chronic kidney disease but not before his organs could help others live.

Umang had been battling kidney complications since childhood. Despite continuous medical treatment, his condition deteriorated. He was admitted to a private hospital on March 28, where doctors strongly recommended an urgent kidney transplant. Though his mother was willing to donate her kidney, a mismatch in blood type ruled out the possibility.

Following an intensive search, Umang underwent a kidney transplant on May 15. However, within days, his health worsened, and he was declared brain-dead on Tuesday.

Amid their unbearable grief, Umang’s parents made an extraordinary decision — they chose to donate his organs. They contacted the Regional Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (East), which determined that Umang’s liver and corneas could be used to save and transform lives.

Umang’s liver was flown to Mumbai and transplanted into a young child, while his corneas restored sight to two individuals.

“My son was brilliant in his studies and had a keen interest in artificial intelligence,” said his grief-stricken mother. “He spent most of his time at home due to his illness, but we always kept him engaged to keep his mind strong. I truly believe that those who receive his organs will also inherit his positive spirit.”

Umang’s story serves as a powerful reminder of the impact organ donation can have — even from someone so young. Though he is no longer among us, his eyes now allow two others to see the world, and his liver has given a child a second chance at life.
