Chennai, 22 May (H.S.) : The Madras High Court has temporarily stayed a recently enacted law by the Tamil Nadu government concerning the appointment of Vice-Chancellors in the state's universities.
The law, which was challenged by the Governor of Tamil Nadu, was stayed by a division bench of Justices R Suresh Kumar and K Kumaresh Babu. The court order came after a petition was filed questioning the validity of the Tamil Nadu Universities (Amendment) Act, 2023.
The petitioner contended that the law was in conflict with the University Grants Commission (UGC) regulations and that it undermined the role of the Governor as the Chancellor of universities in the state.
The court has now sought the state government's response on the matter and listed the case for further hearing. The stay on the law is expected to have implications for the appointment of Vice-Chancellors in Tamil Nadu's universities.
The development has sparked interest in academic and political circles, with many awaiting the court's final verdict on the matter. The outcome is likely to impact the governance and administration of higher education institutions in the state.
