New Delhi, April 8 (H.S.): The Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025 has come into effect today. The central government issued a notification regarding this on Wednesday.
According to it, The central government, exercising the powers conferred by subsection (2) of section 1 of the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025 (Act No. 14 of 2025), hereby designates April 8, 2025, as the date on which the provisions of the said Act shall come into force.
President Droupadi Murmu approved the Waqf (Amendment) Bill on April 5. The bill was passed by the Lok Sabha on April 3 and by the Rajya Sabha on April 4.
Earlier today, the central government filed a caveat in the Supreme Court. It requested that the government be heard first on petitions challenging the validity of the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025. The government's intent behind this is to ensure that no adverse decision is made regarding the Act without hearing its side.
A total of 12 petitions have been filed in the Supreme Court challenging the Waqf Act. Congress MP Imran Pratapgarhi has challenged the Waqf Amendment Act in the Supreme Court. The All India Muslim Personal Law Board has also filed a petition against the Waqf Amendment Act in the Supreme Court.
