The reason for celebrating National Maritime Day on April 5 is historical. The venture of the first ship, SS Loyalty, of The Scindia Steam Navigation Company Limited, is considered one of the historical moments in India's navigation. It had embarked on its journey to the United Kingdom.

Various programs are organized across the country on National Maritime Day. Those who have made outstanding contributions in this sector are awarded the 'Varun' prize. Its extraordinary commitment to maritime training and certification honors those who have made significant contributions to the maritime and educational fields.
