New Delhi, April 25 (H.S.): In the recent elections for Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Delhi, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a decisive victory. Raja Iqbal Singh was elected Mayor, while Jai Bhagwan Yadav became Deputy Mayor after Congress candidate Areeba Khan withdrew, allowing Yadav to be elected unopposed.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) did not contest, ensuring the BJP's success. Raja Iqbal Singh expressed gratitude post-victory, promising strong support within the Delhi Municipal Corporation. He noted that development efforts had been stagnant, but with BJP leadership, progress would accelerate, particularly in education and health. A total of 142 councilors voted, with the BJP candidate receiving 133 votes against 8 for Congress.
The electoral college for the mayor included 238 councilors, 10 MPs, and 14 MLAs. Iqbal Singh also pledged to focus on reducing pollution in the capital. This win solidifies the BJP’s triple-engine government in Delhi, controlling central, state, and municipal power. Before the election, a tribute was paid to the victims of the Pahalgam attack.
